New Pet Magazine Coming to NYC!

Hey dog lovers!

Sorry I've been away for so long. As you know, life can take some twists and turns when you least expect it and my life is twisting and turning!

Well, I recently found out some great news and I just had to share it with you.

A pet magazine called City Tails is going to debut in New York City in December! I'm excited about this news because I was so disappointed after a very popular pet magazine ceased operations several months ago. Where was I going to get my regular dose of doggie fashion, entertainment and animal welfare news? It looks like City Tails is ready to give New Yorkers something to read and talk about!

Here's more information about the City Tails launch:

Janice Brown, founder of the Tails Pet Media Group, Inc., a Chicago-based publisher of local area pet magazines dedicated to animal rescue and adoption, announced the launching of City Tails.

Debuting in December, the magazine will offer practical, interesting, and entertaining local and national pet news and related features. It will also provide complete and up-to-date shelter listings, breed-rescue organization information, and emergency contacts. “New York City is one of the country’s best metropolitan areas for pets—it has a very active and passionate pet community—an ideal audience for our magazine,” said Ms. Brown. The Tails Pet Media Group, Inc. publishes award-winning magazines in 14 markets nationwide, with more on the way.

The American Humane Society estimates that six to eight million dogs and cats are euthanized in animal shelters annually across the US, costing local governments an estimated two billion dollars and according to the most recent available data, more than 40,000 animals were euthanized in New York City in 2005.

"We want to make people aware of the fact that they can adopt healthy and playful animals—even purebreds—and save that animal’s life," said Lorraine Sakli, City Tails Regional Publisher. "I consider this a great opportunity to bring valuable information and insight to pet guardians, and look forward to the challenge of building this magazine and making it available to everyone who has a pet they cherish."

City Tails will be distributed each month in street boxes strategically placed throughout NYC, as well as at pet product retailers, veterinarian offices, grocery stores, book stores, coffee houses, and many other mainstream and pet-friendly locations on a free basis. There are two things that are close to my heart -- writers and dogs. As early as 7 years old, I knew I wanted to write and despite severe allergies, I've always dreamed of having a dog. Now I have a adorable little pooch and I get to write this blog for my fellow pet lovers! Hurrah!

Recently, I was tipped off to a cool event happening at Symphony Space in Manhattan. It's called Writer's and their Dogs. I highly encourage you to attend and support writers and dog lovers!

Dog Saves Family From Fire Blamed on Cat

GREENVILLE, Maine - Thumper, a black Labrador retriever, is getting credit for saving a Greenville man when a fire swept through his home.

Roland Cote said his wife and their 7-year-old grandson were away when the blaze started early Sunday in a converted two-story garage. He said Thumper grabbed him by the arm to wake him, leaving just enough time for him to dial 911 before fleeing the fast-moving fire.

While the dog is the hero, a cat is the bad guy in this story.

Cote said the fire marshal investigator believes the blaze was started when Princess, the family cat, tipped over a kerosene lantern. Cote says he and his pets escaped safely, but he says Princess did get her tail singed by the flames.

Dogs, Handlers Learn to Boogie and Disco

EAST TROY, Wis. - Ricky the Dalmatian spun across the floor with his 68-year-old handler, the high-stepping Mary Ann Coutley. The two were one of 23 pairs of handlers and pets participating in a three-day dog dancing class that ended Sunday at the Army Lake Camp and Retreat Center.

The handlers paid $275 each for a room, meals and lessons on everything from costumes to music and training tactics.

They learned twists, passes, cha-cha steps and other movements, slinking across the floor with their furry friends.

While "Dancers with Woofs K9 Freestyle Dance Camp" purported to be the first in the region, enthusiasts have been dancing with dogs since the 1980s. They formed the World Canine Freestyle Organization in 1999.

In freestyle dancing, the handlers and dogs work to be artistic and creative. Many also do Heelwork-to-Music, which combines obedience and dance.

"There's Olympic-style scoring up to 10," said instructor Linda Blanchard, 59, of Pontiac, Mich. "The goal for this sport is to become an Olympic sport."

The dogs are trained to follow verbal or hand commands. In freestyle, pretty much anything goes.

"You have to pick out music that goes with your dog," Blanchard says. "The dogs can do figure eights around your legs. They spin, and we spin. Sometimes they're on their hind legs. They can wave, do marching things, jump over things."

Coutley used to dance with a 12-year-old Dalmatian named Wynona, who died in April. She is grooming Ricky to be her new partner with daily workouts that include six miles on a treadmill.

"He's a chow hound," Coutley said, feeding 1-year-old Ricky some turkey hot dogs. "He'll work for anything."

DockDogs Event Recap

Jumping dogs stop NYers in their tracks

New Yorkers who watched a dozen competitive canines perform acrobatic leaps into a giant pool in Bryant Park on Tuesday were surprised to learn that they were watching one of the fastest growing sports in America.

"Shut up, you're kidding," said one young woman who stopped to watch what she said she couldn't believe was even a sport.

But the DockDogs National Championship Series is no joke, said Grant Reeves, CEO of DockDogs, the sanctioning body for regional, national and international dog dock jumping.

"In 2002, there were 240 dogs competing," Reeves said. "Now there are 8,400."

The sport even has coverage on a cable network. The Outdoor Channel plans to broadcast both the Big Air event, which measures distance, and the Extreme Vertical event, which measures height, as a seven-part original series beginning Oct. 4.

Though many New Yorkers came and went throughout the day, there were always at least 200 people oohing and aahing as the dogs ran down a 40-foot dock and splashed into four feet of water.

FreshPet: Roxie's favorite new dog food

Roxie and I were recenlty introduced to Freshpet, a new dog food brand on the market that touts it's freshness and natural goodness.

In the wake of the pet food recalls, Roxie and I decided to give Freshpet a try. I fed Roxie this food over the course of several weeks, observing her behavior and speed of eating. Our results are below.

It was love at first sight for Roxie. She seemed to be able to smell the Chicken and Veggies before I could even open the package. I was pleased to see that it was meaty chunks in asealed pouch versus a can full of gloppy, gelatinous goop. I was also happy to see it looked like real food, I think I even saw fresh herbs! Talk about mouth-watering!

Roxie and I both couldn't wait to see what this food was all about and it was feeding time, so I spooned out the correct portion of Freshpet for her size into a bowl on the floor. Roxie is trained to wait for my hand signal before she can eat and this time she just couldn't help herself, she dove right into her bowl of chicken and vegetable and ate it with gusto!

I was so surpised by Roxie's reaction that I called my husband over to see her in action. Within minutes, the food was gone and she was begging me for more. Roxie gave it 2 paws up!

I was impressed, but decided to feed her Freshpet for 2 more weeks to be sure she didn't have loose stool or develop any allergies. So far, so good! Roxie is still enjoying Freshpet and doesn't even look twice at her former kibble of choice.

I'd definitely try this brand again if they were in a grocery store closer to my home. Gristedes isn't a great grocery store and their chain has been shrinking over the past year. I do hope that I will be able to find Freshpet at my local Pathmark, Petco, PetSmart or even via FreshDirect.

Blydenburg Dog Park Opens!

HUNTINGTON, N.Y., September 6, 2007 – The Long Island Dog Owners Group (LI-DOG) and Suffolk County Legislator John Kennedy will kick off the Grand Opening of the new Blydenburgh Dog Park with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Friday, Sept. 7th at 1 p.m.

The event will feature:

- Brief speeches by Leg. Kennedy and LI-DOG organizers
- The Ribbon Cutting
- A ceremonial First Frisbee Toss by Leg. Kennedy
- Great Photo Ops
- Coffee and donuts
- Plenty of happy dogs and dog owners!

The dog park is located within 627-acre Blydenburgh County Park in the southern section of the park. Entrance to the Park is on Veterans Memorial Hwy., opposite the H. Lee Dennison Building. The dog park itself is on the Activity field, north of the campgrounds.

The new dog park is the result of the efforts of Leg. Kennedy and the Long Island Dog Owners Group. In August 2005, Leg. Kennedy introduced a resolution to create a dog park within Blydenburgh County Park. The resolution was passed 17-0 by the Suffolk County Legislature and signed into law by County Executive Steve Levy in October 2005.

Throughout 2006 and early 2007, LI-DOG worked with Leg. Kennedy and the Suffolk County Parks Dept. to locate a suitable site within the park for an off-leash area and made recommendations on its layout and features. Construction began on the dog park in the summer 2007 and was completed in September.

The dog park, which is fenced and covers 1.8 acres, features an area for small dogs and an area for large dogs; doubled-gated entries; a water fountain for each area; plenty of benches; and waste bag dispensers.

What's up with Roxie?

A few readers have asked what my pup Roxie is up to, so I thought I'd share briefly...you'll see her schedule is quite full! :-)

During the week, she's getting belly rubs and scratches from mommy and daddy. It's a must!

And when she's not modeling (see photo above), she is flinging herself into anything dirty, smelly, or just plain disgusting. Ahhh, the joys of bathtime!

On weekends, she visits nana and grampa in Long Island for some super off leash fun.

And finally, she's working on writing a review as soon as she can get her paws on my laptop. I have to admit, I've been hogging the blog lately. So much news, so little time!

Helmsley leaves dog $12M, grandkids zilch

Leona Helmsley's dog will continue to live an opulent life, and then be buried alongside her in a mausoleum. But two of Helmsley's grandchildren got nothing from the late luxury hotelier and real estate billionaire's estate.

Helmsley left her beloved white Maltese, named Trouble, a $12 million trust fund, according to her will, which was made public Tuesday in surrogate court.

She also left millions for her brother, Alvin Rosenthal, who was named to care for Trouble in her absence, as well as two of four grandchildren from her late son Jay Panzirer -- so long as they visit their father's grave site once each calendar year.

Otherwise, she wrote, neither will get a penny of the $5 million she left for each.

Helmsley left nothing to two of Jay Panzirer's other children -- Craig and Meegan Panzirer -- for "reasons that are known to them," she wrote.

But no one made out better than Trouble, who once appeared in ads for the Helmsley Hotels, and lived up to its name by biting a housekeeper.

"I direct that when my dog, Trouble, dies, her remains shall be buried next to my remains in the Helmsley mausoleum," Helmsley wrote in her will.

The mausoleum, she ordered, must be "washed or steam-cleaned at least once a year." She left behind $3 million for the upkeep of her final resting place in Westchester County, where she is buried with her husband, Harry Helmsley, and where the pair have a view of the New York skyline.

She also left her chauffeur, Nicholas Celea, $100,000.

Everything else, including cash from sales of the Helmsley's residences and belongings, reported to be worth billions, she ordered sold and the proceeds given to the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust.

Her longtime spokesman, Howard Rubenstein, had no comment.

Helmsley died earlier this month at her Connecticut home. She became known as a symbol of 1980s greed and earned the nickname "the Queen of Mean" after her 1988 indictment and subsequent conviction for tax evasion. One employee had quoted her as snarling, "Only the little people pay taxes."

Scamp knows death when he sees it

Scamp is the live-in pet at an Ohio nursing home, but the Schnauzer doesn't just bring companionship to the lonely. He has an eerie gift that also allows him to bring comfort to the dying.

Scamp can somehow sense when the end is near for one of the old folks. He then waits loyally by their bedside in the final hours.

Scamp's owner, Deirdre Huth, is a staff member at the nursing home, The Pines, in Canton. Ohio. She says Scamp even tries to raise the alarm when he gets the feeling that one of the seniors is at death's door.

"He has either barked or he'll pace around the room. The only time he barks is when he's trying to tell us something's wrong," Huth told INSIDE EDITION.

Yvette Notturno had a dear friend in the nursing home, and had heard stories about Scamp's gift. So when she got a call from a nurse that Scamp wouldn't leave her friends' bedside, she came right away knowing that her friend didn't have long,. Yvette's friend, Andrew Popa, died soon after.

Another critter made the news recently performing a similar feat. A cat named Oscar is known to curl up on the bed right before a patient dies at a nursing home in Providence, Rhode Island. Oscar's gift was featured in a top medical journal after he predicted more than 20 deaths.

But Scamp's record is even more amazing than Oscar's. Director of nursing Adeline Baker says Scamp has forecast practically every one of the 40 or so deaths that have occurred in the three years he's been at the home. She also insists Scamp's presence is welcomed by patients as the end draws near.

"It's not like he's a grim reaper," she said. "It's kind of comforting to know that maybe at the end of our lives, if we don't have family members, there will be somebody there to be with us."

A Chihuahua puppy born in Japan with a natural heart shaped pattern on his coat has captured the hearts of animal lovers around the world.

Heart-kun, as he has been named by owner Emiko Sakurada, was born on May 18, 2007, one of a litter of puppies at the Pucchin Dogs shop.

His natural heart-shaped markings on his fur have made him an instant star in Japan. And it was a case of puppy love across the world as the tiny dog made television appearances worldwide.

Shop owner Ms Sakurada got the surprise of her life when she saw the birthmark heart markings in the fur of her tiny pooch.

She said it was the first time a puppy with these marks had been born out of the 1,000 animals that she has bred.

Since Heart-kun was born, he has brought a lot of luck, according to Ms Sakurada. He sister got lucky on the lottery and won a concert ticket.

Heart-kun's owner has been inundated with requests from people wanting to purchase the unique puppy. But they can keep their paws off him, she says, for her little four-legged friend ain't going nowhere!

Kennel Cough Epidemic?

A friend of mine just realized her dog may be a victim of a possible kennel cough epidemic in Brooklyn. The NY Post has even speculated on the issue:

SICK AS A DOG IN BROOKLYN

Brooklyn kennels that are dogged by an epidemic of a dangerous canine illness are turning away scores of pooches - and, in some cases, closing their doors - to prevent spreading the highly contagious infection.

Numerous cases of "kennel cough," an airborne viral or bacterial disease that effects the respiratory system, have popped up, particularly in Park Slope, experts said yesterday.

Brooklyn Dog House, a Park Slope kennel, temporarily closed last week after five of their dogs turned out to be sick.

"There is an outbreak in Brooklyn, and it seems like Park Slope is the epicenter," said manager A.J. Catanzaro.

"We shut our doors Aug. 16 as a preemptive measure so we can be ready for the holiday weekend coming up," said Catanzaro.

Park Slope veterinarian Dr. Dionne Burnett has seen an increase in kennel cough in the past two weeks. She said dog owners should look out for a dry cough, eye and nasal discharge and loss of appetite.

"If your dog is showing these signs, consider an exam," Burnett said.

"The best possible scenario would be to not put your dog in a boarding facility for the next two weeks."

Catanzaro said staffers at the Brooklyn Dog House scrub all surfaces in their facility and quarantine sick animals.

"It's extremely contagious - it's just like the common cold for us. You just have to let it run its course," he said.

Infected dogs have a distinctive sound, "like they have something stuck in their throat, like a cat coughing up a hairball," Catanzaro added.

The Dog House, which usually holds about 80 animals, now has fewer than 30.

"We took a big financial hit. This is a very busy time for us. But you have to do the right thing," said kennel owner Malcolm Smart.

Another Brooklyn kennel, Woofs 'n Whiskers, in Red Hook, will not be accepting any new dogs until Labor Day as a precaution.

"We've tripled our security at the front door," said owner Danielle Vidals. "We want dogs to be symptom-free for at least two weeks before we can accept them."

In Asia, royalty used to put their Pekingese in their coat sleeves to keep them warm. The breed was the exclusive property of the Chinese Imperial Court, and commoners even had to bow to the dogs.

The oldest breed of dog native to North America is the Chihuahua.

Dogs turn in circles before lying down because of natural instinct; in the wild their wolf ancestors did this to flatten long grass into a cozy bed.

A puppy's eyes do not open until they are 10 to 15 days old. Vision is usually not completely developed until they are approximately four weeks old.

A mixed-breed dog will usually possess the behavioral traits of the breed they most closely resemble in appearance.

The classic Poodle haircut was originally meant to improve the dog's swimming abilities as a retriever, with the pom-poms left in place to warm their joints, and a fluffy bulbous tail meant to stick up out of the water so they're able to be spotted easily.

A puppy's natural instinct will make them chew on absolutely anything that they come into contact with, (so always be sure they have something safe to nibble on).

Puppies should remain with their mother until they are at least eight weeks old. During this time she will teach them not to bite and how to get along with fellow littermates.

39% percent of pet parents say they have more photos of their pet than of their spouse or significant other. Just 21% say they have more photos of their spouse or significant other than of their pet.

Survivors of the Titanic included two dogs: a Pekingese and a Pomeranian.

An American Animal Hospital Association poll showed that 33% of dog parents admit that they talk to their dogs on the phone or leave messages on an answering machine while away from home.

The oldest dog lived for 29 years. He was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who died in 1939.

Dogs are mentioned 14 times in the Bible.

The smallest mature dog was a Yorkshire Terrier from Blackburn, England that was 2 1/2 inches high at its shoulder, and weighed only four ounces.

The tallest dog is a Great Dane named Gibson in Grass Valley, CA, who stands 42.6 inches high at the shoulder, (when he stands upright on his hind legs, he's over 7 feet tall!), and weighs 170 pounds.

If you notice a dog when he is fast asleep, you will see his eyes moving back and forth under the lids, as a human's eyes do. Researchers are almost certain that dogs dream.

Dogs' nose prints are used to identify them, just as fingerprints are used to identify humans.

When a dog bays at the moon, he is following his basic instinct to call the pack together.

70% of pet parents sign their pet's name on greeting cards. 58% include pets in family and holiday photos.

A Reading (with dogs) at the Museum of the City of New York

Summer Pet Care Tips

When the lazy days of barbecues and swimming pools roll around, you can make them even better by sharing them with your favorite pet. By following a few summer pet safety tips, you can keep your animal friends healthy and enjoy the months of sun and fun.

* Never leave your pet in the car. Though it may seem cool outside, the sun can raise the temperature inside your car to 120 degrees Fahrenheit in a matter of minutes, even with the windows rolled down. If you need to run some errands, leave the furry ones at home.

* As you're outside enjoying the warm weather, keep your pet leashed. It will keep her from getting lost, fighting other animals, and eating and drinking things that could make her sick. This tip isn't just for dogs--even cats can learn to walk on a leash if you train them.

* Water, water everywhere. Whether you're indoors or out, both you and your pet need access to lots of fresh water during the summer, so check her water bowl several times a day to be sure it's full. If you and your furry friend venture forth for the afternoon, bring plenty of water for both of you.

* Pets need sunscreen too. Though all that fur helps protect her, your pet can get sunburned, particularly if she has light skin and hair. Sunburn in animals can cause problems similar to those it can cause in people, including pain, peeling, and skin cancer. So keep your pet out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and when you do go out, rub a bit of sunblock on unprotected areas like the tips of her ears, the skin around her lips, and the tip of her nose.

* Say no to tangles. Keeping your pet well groomed will help her hair do what it was designed to do: protect her from the sun and insulate her from the heat. If she has extremely thick hair or a lot of mats and tangles, her fur may trap too much heat, so you may want to clip her.

* Watch out for antifreeze. Hot weather may tempt your pet to drink from puddles in the street, which can contain antifreeze and other chemicals. Antifreeze has a sweet taste that animals like, but it's extremely toxic. When you're walking your pet, make sure she doesn't sneak a drink from the street.

* Be cautious on humid days. Humidity interferes with animals' ability to rid themselves of excess body heat. When we overheat we sweat, and when the sweat dries it takes excess heat with it. Our four-legged friends only perspire around their paws, which is not enough to cool the body. To rid themselves of excess heat, animals pant. Air moves through the nasal passages, which picks up excess heat from the body. As it is expelled through the mouth, the extra heat leaves along with it. Although this is a very efficient way to control body heat, it is severely limited in areas of high humidity or when the animal is in close quarters.

* Make sure your pet doesn't overexert herself. Though exercise is an important part of keeping your dog or cat at a healthy weight, which helps her body stay cool, overdoing it can cause her to overheat. Keep the walks to a gentle pace and make sure she has plenty of water. If she's panting a lot or seems exhausted, it's time to stop.

* Take it easy on pets that can't deal with the heat. Elderly, very young, and ill animals have a hard time regulating their body temperature, so make sure they stay cool and out of the sun on steamy summer days. Dogs with snub noses, such as Pekingese, pugs, and bulldogs, have a hard time staying cool because they can't pant efficiently, so they also need to stay out of the heat. Overweight dogs are also more prone to overheating, because their extra layers of fat act as insulation, which traps heat in their bodies and restricts their breathing capabilities.

* Bring them inside. Animals shouldn't be left outside unsupervised on long, hot days, even in the shade. Shade can move throughout the afternoon, and pets can become ill quickly if they overheat, so keep them inside as much as possible. If you must leave your pet in the backyard, keep a close eye on her and bring her in when you can.

* Keep an eye out for heatstroke. Heatstroke is a medical emergency. If you suspect your pet has heatstroke, you must act quickly and calmly. Have someone call a veterinarian immediately. In the meantime, lower the animal's body temperature by applying towels soaked in cool water to the hairless areas of the body. Often the pet will respond after only a few minutes of cooling, only to falter again with his temperature soaring back up or falling to well below what is normal. With this in mind, remember that it is imperative to get the animal to a veterinarian immediately. Once your pet is in the veterinarian's care, treatment may include further cooling techniques, intravenous fluid therapy to counter shock, or medication to prevent or reverse brain damage.

Even with emergency treatment, heatstroke can be fatal. The best cure is prevention, and Fido and Fluffy are relying on you to keep them out of harm's way. Summer does not have to be fraught with peril--with ample precaution, both you and your furry friends can enjoy those long, hot dog-days of summer.

* Collapse

Hi there!

Sorry I've been away from the Rex in tha City blog. I took a much needed vacation to Mystic, CT and it was lovely. I highly recommend our fave B&B, The Inn at Harbor Hill Marina. The innkeepers Sue & Dave Labrie are wonderful people and their cute little inn sits right on the water. Doggone it! I'm back to reality!

Freakin' out over food

I first learned of the pet food recall 3 weeks ago and now, it seems the panic is setting in among my close friends and fellow dog lovers.

Just recently, Del Monte pulled many of its pet snacks off the shelves. There is so much to know and the stories are coming fast and furious.

Here's where I go to keep abreast of what's going on with the pet food recall.

1. Newsday -- They have a neat package of local and national news, videos, and a poll dedicated to the tainted food frenzy. It's being updated frequently.

2. Poop City -- A great pet blog that is closely watching every morsel of good and bad news in the pet food recall.

3. New York Tails -- This local publication is great resource for those who want to actually do something about the problem of poor quality pet food. NYT is encouraging pet owners to send photos and letters to make sure the FDA takes this seriously.

With all these resources, there's no reason to freak out over food. Please don't panic, just do your best to stay informed of the situation and do what you can to monitor your pet's health.

My heart goes out to those families who have lost a pet due to the harmful ingredients in these foods.

Every morning, my pup Roxie wakes up and faithfully does her downward facing dog pose. It makes me giggle everytime.

It's interesting how dogs are so limber and can stretch into poses humans can only wish to achieve. Being a yoga lover -- i've done poses in a room warmed to 105 degrees -- I was pleased to see this story about doggie yoga at the Humane Society in Washington. Truly inspiring!

Warning: Pet Food Recall

A major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart, Safeway, Kroger and other store brands recalled 60 million containers of wet pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected pet food, Menu Foods said in announcing the North American recall. Product testing has not revealed a link explaining the reported cases of illness and death, the company said.

"At this juncture, we're not 100 percent sure what's happened," said Paul Henderson, the company's president and chief executive officer. However, the recalled products were made using wheat gluten purchased from a new supplier, since dropped for another source, spokeswoman Sarah Tuite said. Wheat gluten is a source of protein.

The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between Dec. 3 and March 6 throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

The pet food was sold by stores operated by the Kroger Company, Safeway Inc., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and PetSmart Inc., among others, Henderson said.

Menu Foods said a full list of brand names and lot numbers covered by the recall would be posted on its Web site - www.menufoods.com/recall. You may also call this hotline for recall information 1-866-895-2708.

Attention Small Dogs!

Hey dog lovers,

It's come to my attention that there's a big campaign to make sure there's a small dog run on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. I'm reposting this information in the hopes of informing others about the issue.

Please read and tell your furry friends...

Do you want an EAST SIDE SMALL DOG RUN?

A 5000 sq. ft. dog run is being built at East 63rd St. Signs
were supposed to be posted throughout the neighborhood alerting
the public to meetings regarding the use of this space;
however, the signs were only posted at the 60th St Dog Run.

Those of us who own small dogs and do not frequent the dog run
were therefore unaware & more importantly, not represented at the meetings.
Not only was the topic to have a separate space for small dogs
raised, the architects original plan showed a separate area for
large & small dogs.

Those at the meeting adamantly opposed it feeling it was unnecessary to
divide the space, one reason being it would be hazardous to
confine their large dogs to a smaller area. THIS IS A 5000 SQ
FT AREA!!!! Clearly, the safety of small dogs was not their
concern.

WE want & need a small dog area in this park. We need to act NOW as construction has already begun.

We have been in conversation with Congresswoman Jessica Lappin?
s office and Community Board 8 & there may be enough time but we
need to act now & act together!

Please e-mail or forward this back to smalldogpeople@aol.com so we
can get a sense of how many supporters we have. There will be
strength in numbers! Also, please forward this to everyone you
know with a small dog!!!!

We are drafting a letter for you to fwd to City Council Member
Jessica Lappin, Jonathan Moody, Dir of Constituent Services,
Elizabeth McKee @ Community Board 8, the Parks Dept & all groups
involved in the decision making of this dog run. Once we have
gathered a list of supporters, we will e-mail it with their
respective addresses. We will only prevail if we overwhelm them
with e-mail!

Our only chance of making this happen is to gather as many
supporters as we can & act quickly!

Roxie loves to sail!

A friend recently made a keen observation of my new blog. She said, "it looks great, but I didn't see any pictures of Roxie."

I can't believe I forgot to give my precious pup some shine!

So without further ado ...

The photo above is Roxie on our Schnauzers Set Sail event. We had 25 guests and their dogs board the historic schooner Pioneer at the South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan for an afternoon sail around the harbor. This sail was the first of its kind for New York City. And our event has since spawned other cool dog-friendly sails and a cruise.

We had a lovely day on the water and plan to do it again soon.

When I get home from work, there's nothing I like better than a glass of Sprite and a shot of Appleton Rum to take my cares away. Ahhh joy!!

The other day, I wasn't paying attention and my pup Roxie managed to stick her nose in my drink and she sneaked at least one slurp before I grabbed it from her! Yuck!

I looove Martha Stewart. My friend once told me, "You pray at the altar of all things Martha." And, I do!

I was devastated when she got into trouble for using a "stock tip" and had to go to Camp Cupcake. My friends and family called me all day to ask how I'm handling the news. I know that seems very weird...

Yes! Yes! Yes! I adore Martha! My family calls me Black Martha whenever I get the urge to be crafty and make homemade beauty products or when I take something that's bland and do it up fancy -- "marthastyle." LOL

Well, I adore Martha Stewart because she is a shrewd businesswoman and creative force to be reckoned with. Plus, she's a dog lover and has three beautiful dogs named Paw Paw, Sharky and Francesca. Sooo adorable! I love when she dedicates space in her magazines or show to dogs.

A few weeks ago, Martha invited a fellow crafty lady named Laurie Marie on her show Martha to demonstrate how to make a handmade picture of Martha's dog Sharky, a French bulldog. Laurie Marie's company is called Pretty Little Things and her crafts are awesome! Check out her Web site.

Dog Trainer to the Rescue! Part 2

So, here’s an update on Roxie’s training.

It turns out, she’s very afraid of people wearing big bulky coats, jerky movements by children, and she’s rude in her greeting to other dogs. All this time I thought she was being barky to protect her people, instead she’s trying to protect herself from scary-looking humans on the street.

With our lady trainer’s guidance, we’re using a clicker to train Roxie and it’s helping the situation greatly. Thanks to the clicker and the cheese treats, I am happy to say that Roxie is improving by leaps and bounds. We give her a “click and treat” everytime she sees a human walking near her and anytime a kid crosses her path. We’ve been doing it for several days and I think by spring she’ll be much more at ease and a happier pooch.

My husband and I still have to do our homework and we’re totally committed to the program. Stay tuned!

Pssst! I know the Secret ...

The other day, before my long commute to my job in Long Island, I sat down to watch Oprah. I was very excited to watch this episode because it was about this movie I’ve been meaning to watch called 'The Secret.'

Quite a few people have told me how life changing this book/movie is and now I must have it!!

'The Secret' is yet another self-help book that Oprah has the tendency to get all preachy about and I am not really a believer in most of those types of books. However, I do agree we have great control over our destiny and that we can make decisions that will put our lives on a greater path of fulfillment. I soaked up the entire hour of Oprah feeling all pumped up to have a positive outlook and I think my thoughts and actions also will have positive affect on those around me, including my relatives, friends, and even my pup Roxie.

You do know that dogs can sense your emotions right? I have read many times that dogs can pick up on a stressful situation, especially if you're tightening the leash at the same time and they will act out. Just food for thought ...

So go out and buy that book or watch the movie with your friends. I am seriously considering throwing a movie screening party, so I can watch it with my gal pals and see what they think. If you don't have time, check out this tiny, tiny book that I love called 'It Works' by R.H. Jarrett. It truly does work! I have used it to help me focus on achieving certain goals and the results are amazing.

I think Westies and Scotties are among the cutest creatures on Earth. Too bad I have severe pet dander allergies, so I'm unable to play with them. However, I will be enjoying them from afar at the upcoming Tartan Day Parade!

This is the 9th annual parade, which is taking place on Saturday, April 14 on 5th Ave. There is a huge media presence, the Mayor, and the public come out to celebrate all things Scottish. Sounds like a hoot right?!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Valentine's Day on this wintry day in the city. We finally got our snow storm and it's quite beautiful. I love it!

I took Roxie out on a brisk walk a few minutes ago ... I was so excited to try out her new red booties I purchased through a breeder friend named Pauline. (Watch video of Roxie sporting her new booties.) She sells them way cheaper than you'd pay in a walk-in dog boutique such as Ritzy Canine or Canine Ranch.

How I adore these red booties, let me count the ways...

Dog Trainer to the Rescue!

I'm so excited! I booked an appointment with an affordable and very nice dog trainer. She gave me so much hope about Roxie’s behavioral issues. Sadly, my pup doesn’t know how to properly greet other dogs without scaring ‘em off and then there’s the random barking at strangers while on leash. Geez!!

My New Year’s resolution was to work on getting more training for myself and my husband so we can better understand why our pup does the things she does and how we can make her life happier. Yay!

So I met with the lady trainer and I’m very optimistic that she can help us. She came to our home and evaluated Roxie and worked with us for an hour or so. (I’m keeping the trainer’s name anonymous until I know how things are working out.)

A few interesting tidbits the trainer mentioned was to consider a Gentle Leader harness. It’s a harness that goes around the muzzle and gives the dog owner better control over the pulling dog. We’re also going to work on my dog’s rudeness and fearfulness too.

During our session, the trainer gave her some good smelly treats she doesn’t normally get to have, such as cheese, chicken, deli meat or Fancy Feast cat food. Yes, I thought the cat food suggestion was strange too, but it must be formulated for dogs or something. I’m willing to give almost anything a try!

Well, I gotta run... I am playing fetch with Roxie indoors for exercise – I bet my neighbors downstairs love that!!

I’ll keep ya posted on the training.

It's a post-Valentine's Day lovefest!! Bring your little ones for socialization, games, and perhaps he or she will fall in love! Red is the color of the day, and doggie love will abound.

We will be playing "matching" and "love" games with the dogs. We will even be having "commitment" ceremonys for the pups. Please bring a Valentine's toy or goodie if you want to participate in our "doggie grab bag" where the dogs will pick the toy they want and then be set up with the giver of that toy.

And not to leave the dog moms and dads out of the fun, we will have wine and cheese and crackers.

Awww, love is definitely in the air! Or is that dog poop I smell? hahahaha!

OK, I'm not really into football, but I do enjoy dressing my dog up in the cutest football jersey and watching the halftime show. So when I came across this in my e-mail's inbox, I was very excited and had to share this with y'all.

Super Puppy Bowl III on Animal Planet. It's the most adorable thing to watch on TV on Super Bowl Sunday. Basically, it's puppies and kittens playing with each other, but it's really cute. If you enjoyed my personal Super Dog Bowl video, then you'll just love Animal Planet's version. Check it out!

This afternoon, I had the playdates of all doggie playdates called the Super Dog Bowl -- Schnauzers vs. Boston Terriers at Animal Haven in Soho, a no-kill shelter/playspace. It was awesome!!

My friends and fellow doggie playgroup organizers Karen, Savannah, Jennifer and I hosted the event and I believe it was truly a 5 star event. We had games to entertain the dogs and humans, including treat-eating, fastest tricks in 30 seconds, and dog racing, to name a few.

Sadly, the Bostons beat the Schnauzers by a nose. So, they will have the bragging rights of Top Dog for the time being. The Schnauzers won't go home defeated, no!! We will rise up and beat those furry munchkins at the next playdate!!

How cute is this? A Beagle-shaped bed & breakfast in Idaho. Yes! It's real and people do stay there overnight. Talk about being in the dog house! hahaha!

I love to stay in bed & breakfasts and I'm always on the lookout for cool places to stay and just relax. Since I'm so dog crazy, I instantly fell in love with this cute little B&B called The Dog Bark Inn and the dog is named "Sweet Willy." I have no intentions of ever setting foot in Idaho - what is the tourist draw anyway? - but this place is surely a sight to see when driving up the road.

Whether you're long in the tooth or still smelling of puppy breath, check out this spot the next time you're in Idaho. It's fun for the whole family.

Blue Light Special

My latest obsession just arrived in the mail. . .

It was on my Amazon Christmas wish list for two years in a row and no one ever purchased it. That’s the kinda luck I have, everyone buys me things they think I’d like instead of just going off the damn list. That really irks me! But I’ll digress and stay on topic today.

It’s called the Simple Solution 11350 Spot Spotter Ultraviolet Urine Detector and costs less than $20. I have been weirdly intrigued by what you can find with a “blue light.” I secretly wondered, “what kind of yucky doggie fluids will I find in my own home?” Today I get to find out!

I inserted the 8 AA batteries it requires, turned off all the lights in my living room, and at first saw nothing. I thought it didn’t work, but after a few steps I could see a couple spots near Roxie’s wee wee pad were urine. Success!!

I moved on to the kitchen and discovered the microwave door handle was quite filthy and so was the refrigerator door and every single doorknob in our tiny condo. Yikes! Needless to say, I found quite a few surprises in the bathroom where the other “magic happens” and now I’m totally skeeved out. No wonder nasty stomach viruses are lurking inside my home . . . all the doorknobs are incubators for filth and germs!

Funny how I got the blue light to find Roxie's bodily fluids and discovered the humans who trample through my home are the main contributors.

This week, my mission is to clean all the doorknobs in the house along with the rest of our home and then check back with the blue light to make sure I didn’t miss anything. So don't go around telling folks my house is nasty!! LOL

It’s hot, fresh, and waiting for you to pick it up. And I don’t mean Krispy Kreme donuts. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s dog poo that’s waiting for you!

According to Newsday.com, one town in Long Island is doing something about its dog doo …

In an effort to curb harmful runoff from animal waste, Babylon town officials will hand out free pooper scoopers to residents today at the West Babylon Animal Shelter.

I think it’s great the animal shelter is trying to help out the community it serves, but I’d think people can handle picking up a little dog dropping on their own. Geez! If you own a dog, you’re no stranger to smelly turds that fall out of your dog 3-6 times a day. Why on Earth do people need a scooper? Just grab a plastic grocery bag and grab it up with gusto! Haha Well, just pick it up and dispose of it in the trash.

I’d prefer Babylon’s animal shelter focus on saving dogs and placing them in needy homes than catering to a bunch of lazy people.

Pssst! Do you love to pamper your pooch without looking at the price tag? Good for you!

Well, I'd love to lavish luxuries upon Roxie, but my husband would have a fit and then I'd feel guilty about it. So, to keep our marriage happy, I've become a bigtime sale watcher. Here's a couple bargains I discovered recently:

A friend of mine walked by the Humane Society the other night and noticed in the window that they had beautiful carriers on sale for $10 with the money going to the Humane Society. She said they were from a good company, but she doesn't remember which, and they were very pretty. They are a good buy and the proceeds go to helping dogs. You should check it out if you need an extra carrier.

Stop by the Humane Society and see for yourself! The Humane Society is located on East 59th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues, closer to 2nd Avenue. It is on the south side of the Queensborough Bridge.

I can truly say having a dog has made me a more patient, kind, and playful person. Every day I'm rewarded with sloppy kisses, wet-nose rubs, and a wagging tail. What more could you ask for!

In an effort to keep my New Year's resolution to nip my pup Roxie's off-and-on aggression issues in the bud. I started watching reruns of the Dog Whisperer. Very interesting show! However, he does has many detractors. So I take his advice with a grain of salt.

Here's some tips he has for the New Year...

New Year's Resolutions for Dog Owners

I encourage owners to make a commitment to their dogs a priority in 2007! Here are a few New Year's Resolutions I recommend.

1. Walk your dog every day for at least 45 minutes to an hour. Walking with your dog twice a day for 30 minutes is the first step toward improving your relationship with your dog. The walk is the foundation of your relationship. It is a powerful tool that will help you connect with all aspects of your dog's mind.

2. Set rules, boundaries and limitations every day. As a pack leader, you need to set the rules both inside and outside the house. What you allow and don't allow is up to you, but be consistent, use calm-assertive energy, and never, ever correct out of anger.

3. Live in the moment. Start the New Year with a clean slate for you and your dog. Let go of the past. Don't worry about the future. With your dog and in your day-to-day life, you will find many benefits.

4. Schedule playtime with your dog once a week. Play fetch. Go for a swim. Play Frisbee. Run an obstacle course. Just make sure your dog has had a long walk beforehand, and only play for the time you have decided in advance to allot.

5. Share affection...at the right times only. After your dog has exercised or eaten. After your dog has changed an unwanted behavior into a behavior that you asked for. After your dog has responded to a rule or command. Share affection only when the dog is in a calm-submissive state!

Whoa is me ...

Ah! The joys of puppy parenthood…

Roxie has been a part of my life for more than a year and I’ve seen it all, including waking my husband and I up at 3 a.m. with her newborn whimpers, the biting of our heels because that’s what puppies do, the loose stool after changing her dog food brand too many times, and the chunks of puppy vomit that appears on the floor after she’s tried to eat something she should have.

So why am I so freaked out by own vomit and feces?

This past weekend, I got the horrendous stomach virus that’s been making it’s way up each and every city block in my neighborhood. I can’t tell you how many people I know were knocked down by this nasty illness. It was my turn and I didn’t know it, until I spent 7 hours at work at my new job in Long Island. Geez!

I sat in the company’s bathroom stall for so long that I heard someone whisper in the hallway “psst! There’s a lady sleeping in one of the stalls! Who is it?!” I had just started my job and didn’t want to become a hot topic of discussion so I mustered up the energy to drag myself to my car and start the one-hour commute home. Talk about torture!

I made it home only to start the vomiting and diarrhea all over again. I was so sick that my bathroom looked like a crime scene. Arggh! The sight of it all freaked me out and also made me vomit some more.

So know that I’m nearly recovered, I’m wondering, “how come I can pick up my dog’s hot, steamy poop off a sidewalk in the rain, but I can’t handle my own bodily fluids?”

New Year, New Dog?

OK, so the New Year is upon us and everyone starts rattling off about how they want to be a better person, yadda, yadda. Personally, I’d like to work on my dog’s behavior.

I do take some blame. She’s a bit aggressive toward strangers and I’ve tried many things to nip it in the bud, but mostly my husband and I believed that socialization would break her out of it. Not so!

So, my New Year’s resolution is to work harder on solving our little pesky problem. I am going to enroll her in what humans might call “anger management” classes. Haha! I’ll keep ya posted on how we’re doing.

Christmas Day Update

Remember that Furcedes I so badly wanted? I got one! Yay!

My younger brother forked over his hard-earned cash and picked one up from Trixie & Peanut. Aww!

I love it. It’s so plush and comfortable, but Roxie still enjoys sitting on the couch with her mom and dad. She sleeps in the car mostly and that’s fine by me.

I’ll post video of her in the car soon.

Last summer, I organized the first-ever doggie sail at the South Street Seaport in Manhattan. (view my photo album) While calling around town looking for unique treats to fill up the nautical-themed goodie bags for the event, I came across Honeybark Bakery in Long Island.

A Holiday Blessing

My friend Savannah and I started a new holiday tradition with our dogs.

On Sunday, we attended the annual Holiday Blessing of the Animals at Central Presbyterian church. It’s a Manhattan holiday tradition of good cheer and caroling to celebrate mankind's best friends and their brethren.

Everyone was filled with Christmas spirit and the event was one I’ll never forget. But don’t take my word for it, read Savannah’s take here:

This lovely event takes place once a year on the Sunday before Christmas Eve, at the Central Presbyterian Church on Park Avenue. I've been interested in this event for sometime, but as a not overly religious person I wasn't sure that I'd be comfortable or even welcome at such an event. I called and spoke with someone at the church, who went out of his way to assure me that people of ALL faiths, religions, or lack there of, are welcome to this blessing. He also promised me that there would be no pressuring towards any religion or denomination.

I was encouraged to come and see for myself. I decided to try it. I packed up my cat and Schnauzer and headed over to the church.

The one hour service preceding the actual blessing was great. There were a few excerpts from the Bible, but primarily quotes and anecdotes about man's best friend and other creatures.

There was a short ceremony honoring the accomplishments of the participants in Puppies Behind Bars, a canine education program where inmates raise and train dogs to be service dogs, bomb dogs, and the like. After a rendition of "Away in a Manger" the blessings began. Attendees had the options of Protestant, Catholic, or Jewish clergy to bless us and our animals. It was at this point that I realized that many of the people there were, like myself, not attached to any particular religion. So many people just wanted affirmation that our pets are as special as we know they are!

Religious, or not, this is an incredibly special event that I would recommend to anyone: dog, cat, hamster (yes there was one there!), and human alike!

A Zen-like Experience

The battle for off leash rights in New York City is finally over. (Read coverage from AMNew York)What a relief!

Like many urban dog owners, I relish the hours between 9 p.m. and 9 a.m. when I can take Roxie to my local park for some fun and frolicking without her leash.

Depending on the day, she'll chase other dogs or we’ll play catch and review basic obedience commands. Going to the park during “off leash hours” for exercise keeps my dog fit and I enjoy the fresh air and surrounding nature. It’s a Zen-like experience.

Bob Marino and his organization, the New York Council of Dog Owner Groups (NYC DOG), were instrumental in winning the legal battle to maintain the special privilege of dogs playing off leash during off hours at local parks. Anyone wishing to express gratitude or make a tax-deductible contribution can visit their Web site: www.nycdog.org.

Now that it’s official, please don’t abuse this freedom. Be a responsible dog owner and leash your dog promptly at 9 a.m., scoop the poop, and allow others to enjoy the park as you do.

Rex in tha City is inspired by my life with Roxie, an adorable miniature Schnauzer, and the fellow dog lovers I've met in New York City and Long Island as the organizer of a dog club called The New York City Schnauzers Playgroup. (powered by Meetup.com)
