DockDogs Event Recap

Hey gang,

amNY has a great story on the DockDogs event I mentioned in an earlier post. Check out their report and photos.

Jumping dogs stop NYers in their tracks

New Yorkers who watched a dozen competitive canines perform acrobatic leaps into a giant pool in Bryant Park on Tuesday were surprised to learn that they were watching one of the fastest growing sports in America.

"Shut up, you're kidding," said one young woman who stopped to watch what she said she couldn't believe was even a sport.

But the DockDogs National Championship Series is no joke, said Grant Reeves, CEO of DockDogs, the sanctioning body for regional, national and international dog dock jumping.

"In 2002, there were 240 dogs competing," Reeves said. "Now there are 8,400."

The sport even has coverage on a cable network. The Outdoor Channel plans to broadcast both the Big Air event, which measures distance, and the Extreme Vertical event, which measures height, as a seven-part original series beginning Oct. 4.

Though many New Yorkers came and went throughout the day, there were always at least 200 people oohing and aahing as the dogs ran down a 40-foot dock and splashed into four feet of water.

No Sleep Til' Brooklyn!!

The New York City Schnauzers playgroup has a morning playdate in Brooklyn's Prospect Park. It's awesome!! Just imagine a huge grassy field where your dog can romp and play off leash. I took Roxie during the winter and she enjoyed it so much and was tuckered out on the subway ride home. I high recommend it!

Check our event calendar for updates (free registration required.)

Be sure to save this handy map of Prospect Park so you can find your furry pals at the playdate!

Cheers!

I had a fabulous time at the Canine Cocktail Pawty. Lots of well-dressed people and fun dogs mingle and enjoyed the evening for a good cause -- Animal Haven, a pet shelter and sanctuary in New York.

I hear there's going to be a Canine Cocktail Pawty in the fall. Kudos to Jenna Gates, organizer of the NYC Shiba Inu Meetup, and everyone who made this cocktail pawty such as success. I can't wait to attend the next one. Stay tuned!

Coming Up: AKC RDO Day!

Andrea Arden, a veteran dog trainer and trusted pet professional, recently reminded me of this upcoming dog event.

From Andrea: It's a couple of months away, but thought I would put the word out there early so you can mark your calendars. The American Kennel Club's Responsible Dog Ownership Day Fair is September 15th in Madison Square Park from 11am-3pm (microchipping clinic starts at 10am).

There are Agility demonstrations (our Agility Director Kris Seiter will be showing off her dogs and their amazing skills), obedience demos, games, rescue groups, and lots more!

Thanks for the tip Andrea!!
